Durante gli anni Quaranta Carlo Levi e Cesare Pavese riflettono sul mito, sia in rapporto alla tradizione classica, sia in rapporto alla manipolazione dei materiali mitologici operata dalle dittature europee. Questo interesse si tradurrà in libri e operazioni culturali importanti per un profondo ripensamento filosofico e letterario del mito. Sulla scorta di quella «conoscenza per citazioni» cara a Benjamin e Jesi, si è cercato di lasciar parlare soprattutto gli autori. È così emersa la rivalutazione del valore poetico e identitario del mito che Levi e Pavese ribadiscono a dispetto delle sue strumentalizzazioni politiche. Per Levi è proprio il carattere mitico della cultura subalterna a renderla più umana e positiva di quella razionalistica dominante. Per Pavese, nonostante la moderna inaccessibilità collettiva al mito, esso rappresenta comunque un modello archetipico di formazione del sé. Non stupisce allora che il mito divenga un elemento fortemente caratterizzante nell’opera di Levi e di Pavese, anche se le sue potenzialità poetiche non vengono immediatamente colte dalla cultura degli anni Quaranta.

During the 1940s, Carlo Levi and Cesare Pavese reflected on the topic of myth, both in relation to the classical tradition and to the manipulation of mythological materials by European dictator regimes. This interest will be transferred into books and cultural operations that are important for a profound rethinking, philosophical and literary, of the myth. On the basis of that &quot;knowledge for citations&quot; dear to Benjamin and Jesi, it is tried to let the authors speak themselves, above all. The revaluation of the poetic and identity value of the myth that Levi and Pavese reaffirm has emerged in spite of its political exploitation. For Levi it is precisely the mythical character of the subaltern culture that makes it more human and positive than the dominant rationalist one. For Pavese, despite the modern collective inaccessibility to myth, it still represents an archetypal model of self-formation. It is not surprising then that the myth becomes a strongly characterizing element in the work of Levi and Pavese, even if its poetic potentialities are not immediately captured by the culture of the forties.
