The Reception of Xenophanes' Philosophical Theology in Plato and the Christian Platonists
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The philosophical theology of Xenophanes of Colophon consists of an anti-anthropomorphic and moral critique of Greek mythology, which is replaced by the rational concept of god. This Xenophanean thought structure became an influential topos of Greek philosophy, which was first adopted by Plato and later shared by numerous Greek thinkers. This topos of Xenophanean theology was adopted also by many Hellenistic-Jewish and Christian apologists who – as heirs to the biblical monotheism – considered Xenophanean critique of mythical gods as the idea of ancient culture they could lean on. Almost all Hellenistic-Jewish and Christian apologies quote Xenophanean-Platonic arguments against pagan gods, borrowed from their philosophical sources. As part of this Xenophanean topos they also adopted the Xenophanean philosophical notion of god which became the cornerstone of their own theology. However, the same critique of mythical anthropomorphism was turned also against the anthropomorphism of the Bible, which generated the problem of the biblical anthropomorphism. The philosophical critique of biblical anthropomorphism was thus the next gateway through which Xenophanean-Platonic rational theology entered Hellenistic-Jewish and patristic thinking. The concept of the god of philosophers in patristic thinking thus represents an import from Greek philosophical sources, which was adopted by apologists as part of the Xenophanean topos.
