El grabador Koloman Sokol (1902-2003), uno de los representantes más imporantes del arte eslovaco y cofundador del grabado moderno eslovaco y mexicano, estudió en la Academia de Artes plásticas de Praga, en el taller de grabado bajo la dirección de M. Švabinský, J. Rambousek, y T. F. Šimon. Tras breve estancia de estudios en Francia, en 1933, volvió a Praga. En 1937, el gobierno checoslovaco le mandó enseňar el grabado a México para satisfacer la demanda del gobierno de México (a raíz de una exposición del grupo de grabadores Hollar en México, en la cual Sokol fue representado). Dictó clases en la Escuela del Arte del Libro. Durante la 2a. Guerra Mundial, en 1942, salió a los EEUU. En 1946 regresó a la República Checoslovaca, dando clases en Bratislava. En 1948 viajó a París, continuando hasta los EEUU (Tucson) donde quedó exiliado y donde vivía con su mujer checa. Expuso individualmente en la Ciudad de México (1938, Palacio de Bellas Artes). Se adhirió a temas mexicanos que le atraían hasta la muerte. Además, influyó en algunos alumnos del Taller de Gráfica Popular a la cabeza con L. Méndez, que se impuso, después de la guerra, en Checoslovaquia (Galería Hollar). A pesar de un gran número de libros publicados sobre su obra, especialmente en Eslovaquia, su etapa y temática mexicana siguen sin una profunda valoración.

The engraver Koloman Sokol (1902-2003, USA) one of the most important representative of the Slovak art and co-founder of the Mexican engraving, studied at the Academy of Plastic Arts in Prague, special workshop under direction of M. Švabinský, J. Rambousek, T. F. Šimon. After a brief period of studies in France (1933) he lived in Prague. In 1937, the Czechoslovak government sent him - on requests of the Mexican government (after an exhibition of the Group Hollar in Mexico, in which he participated) to Mexico as teacher. He was active at the School of Art of the Book (Escuela del Arte del Libro). During the IIWW (1942), he went away from Mexico to the USA. In 1946, he turned to the Czech republic, where, in 1947, he did teach in Bratislava. But in September 1948 he leaved for Paris, and turned to the family in the USA (Tucson) where he lived with his Czech wife. He organized an individual exhibition at the Mexico City (1938, Palacio de Bellas Artes) and adhered, for all his life, to Mexican themes. He influenced some artists of the Workshop of Popular Engraving (Taller de Gráfica Popular) with L. Méndez ahead, which was popular after the War in Czechoslovakia (Gallery Hollar). Although there were published many books about him, after all in Slovakia, till today is missing a profound valuation of his Mexican stage and themes.
