The participation of Icelandic artists in the activities of the European avant-garde in the first quarter of the twentieth century concerns the works of a few artists, who resided in cultural centres like Berlin, Dresden, Paris and Copenhagen, rather than works of artists living in Reykjavík. As the cases of Jón Stefánsson and Finnur Jónsson show, the direct links to schools, movements and groups abroad was in many ways a necessary premise for Icelandic artists engaging in the search for new modes of artistic expression.
