The article contextualizes the position of A.L.Kennedy and Ali Smith within the Anglophone literature tradition. Although each of them manifests her own idiosyncratic approach, they have in common a preoccupation with the small lives of ordinary people, and focus in their writing on giving a voice to those often remain silent, disregarded and insiginificant due to the prevalent hegemony of patriarchal society, still dominant in this part of the world.
