Cosmopolitan Dreams, Macsovszky's Making Skeletons Dance: Images of the Netherlands in Slovak Literature
Popis výsledku anglicky
The prose work of the Slovakian writer Peter Macsovszky is defined by literary scholars as playful yet open to many intellectual themes. In his books the author mainly tries to attract attention by means of sketches of a surrealistic nature in which he does not shy away from collage technique and focuses on meanings, multilayered language and he follows the point of view of the deconstruction of Derrida. His sixth book entitled Mykať kostlivcami is not translated into Dutch, but noticed and fragmented in English as Making Skeletons Dance by Peter and Julia Sherwood) is about the notorious note-taker Šimon Blef, a typical vagant character, who lives in Amsterdam and further dreams of other cities and cultures. Based on concepts of representation (Veberová, Bílek et al, 2012), stereotypes and imagology (Beller and Leerssen, 2007) around Dutch culture, art and literature (Krol 2007), we want to show that the author cultivates some well known stereotypes of Dutch culture in Slovakia, yet innovates by adding his vision on urban landscapes. His postmodern view provides a cosmopolitan view, adding images of the other, the distant and even a nomadic view, for example when he dreams about distant countries in Central America.
