Die vorgelegte Publikation erforscht den Prager deutschen Roman der 30er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts im Zusammenhang mit der literarischen Neuen Sachlichkeit. Der Untersuchung werden drei Romane der Prager deutschen Literatur unterzogen, und zwar Otto Roelds Malenski auf der Tour, Hans Natoneks Kinder einer Stadt und Paul Kornfelds Blanche oder Das Atelier im Garten. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich die Programmatik der Neuen Sachlichkeit nicht nur in den Werken der Weimarer und Österreichischen Republiken wiederspiegelt, sondern dass sie auch ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Phänomens der Prager deutschen Literatur ist. In den Mittelpunkt der Analyse rücken neusachliche Verhaltenslehren der Kälte, die Helmut Lethen in seiner gleichnamigen Monografie herausgearbeitet hat und deren drei Varianten in den einzelnen Romanen diskutiert werden. Die Verhaltenslehre der Arbeit, die im Erzähltext von Roeld dominant ist, bietet Verhaltensregeln fürs Überleben in der modernen Welt der Angestellten, nach denen sich die Hauptfigur des Romans, der Prager Geschäftsreisende Heinrich Malenski, konsequent richtet. Der Prager Jude Dowidal und seine Jugendfreunde aus Natoneks Roman versuchen dagegen, der Verhaltenslehre des Sportes zu folgen, die starke, leistungsfähige und unbeugsame Individuen erzeugt. In Kornfelds umfangreichem Roman Blanche geht es um die Verhaltenslehre der Liebe, nach der neusachliche, d. i. nüchterne und gleichberechtigte, Beziehungen gepflegt werden sollten. Alle drei Verhaltenslehren erweisen sich trotz ihres vorbildlichen Charakters als unproduktiv bzw. unhaltbar und alle Hauptfiguren geraten am Ende der Handlung in eine ausweglose Situation. Das Buch setzt sich außer der Charakteristik der Neuen Sachlichkeit auch mit den Biografien der einzelnen Autoren auseinander; bei Otto Roeld handelt es sich um seine erste, in Buchform veröffentlichte Biografie. Neben der Untersuchung der Zugehörigkeit der drei Prager deutschen Romane zur literarischen Neuen Sachlichkeit, wurde der Stand der Forschung auch durch die detaillierte Begriffsbestimmung der Kunstströmung ‚Neue Sachlichkeit‘ erweitert.

This publication focuses on new-objective works by Prague-German authors and their integration into the canon of new-objective literature that has been previously associated only with works by authors from the Weimar or Austrian Republic. Three novels from the 1930s, Otto Roeld&apos;s Malenski auf der Tour, Hans Natonek&apos;s Kinder einer Stadt and Paul Kornfeld&apos;s Blanche oder Das Atelier im Garten, were chosen to demonstrate the new-objective way of conduct as it is reflected in novels from the Weimar Republic from the 1920s and 1930s within the &apos;circle&apos; of Prague-German authors. In the three analysed novels, a different type of cool conduct with its main rules, as it is defined by Helmut Lethen in his monography Cool Conduct, has been observed. Roelds Malenski auf der Tour is, on both a formal/narrative as well as on a thematic (the world of salesmen and finance) level, a brilliant example of a new-objective work. The narrator in the novel keeps distance from the narration; the style of narration is objective and Malenski&apos;s enumeration of the learned rules of cool conduct in his employment evokes the typical new-objective trend of guidebooks. The rules of cool conduct regarding employment are prevalent in Roeld&apos;s Malenski auf der Tour and they deal with the position of the individual in the collective in order to guarantee profit and success in business. Cool conduct in the sphere of sport, which is dominant in Natonek&apos;s Kinder einer Stadt, focuses on individuals who, using sport and applying various learned conducts within sport, try to strengthen both their body and mind. The third type of cool conduct, that is, in one&apos;s love life, is the main topic in Kornfeld&apos;s Blanche. The strategies of cool conduct in love offer methods of developing a new-objective relationship in which people are free from the pre-war patriarchal morality. A special emphasis is placed on the analysis of three female protagonists whose main function is to complement each other. The analysis has proved all varieties of cool conduct to be inefficient because life according to their rules does not lead to a productive life; on the contrary, it leads to loneliness and estrangement. Apart from a thorough analysis of the modern, new-objective types of conduct in the respective novels, the background, origins, and the main features of literary New Objectivity are summarized in the opening chapter. The biography of the authors preceding the analysis of the relevant novel points out their most important stages in life stages, their literary production, as well as their participation in the cultural space of Bohemia and the Weimar Republic.
