Smil von Lichtenburg († 1269) war einer der wichtigsten Adligen des Königreichs Böhmen. Der Beitrag konzentriert sich auf seine Karriere am Hofe von Ottokar II. Zunächst werden Smils Abstammung und frühe Karriere (bevor Ottokar König wurde) sowie der Charakter seiner Grundstücke untersucht. Der Beitrag konzentriert sich dann auf die Selbstdarstellung von Smil von Lichtenburg, die im ritterlichen Ethos verwurzelt war und auch seinen edlen Status als Baron betonte; all dies (Ritterlichkeit und hoher Status) geht auch aus der letzten Art seines Siegels hervor. Als nächstes wird seine Kampferfahrung untersucht. Smil nahm an einer großen Schlacht (Kressenbrunn 1260), einem Kreuzzug (1254/55), kleinen Gefechten (Laa an der Thaya 1246) und sogar erfolglosen Feldzügen (Mühldorf 1257) teil. Im letzten Teil wird Smils Position am Hofe von Ottokar II untersucht. Ihre persönliche Beziehung war wahrscheinlich nicht sehr warm, da Smil 1248/49 an Ottokars Aufstand gegen seinen Vater an der Seite des „alten Königs“ Wenzel I. gegen den zukünftigen König teilnahm. Obwohl Smil zur Zeit der Regierungszeit von Ottokar II. kein Amt innehatte, war er sehr häufig am Hofe des Königs und seine großen Grundstücke wurden nie beschlagnahmt. Vielleicht ist die beste Art, Smils Position am Hof zu beschreiben, die eines Rollenspiels. Smil spielte die Rolle eines ritterlichen Höflings und Ottokar gab sich als guter König aus, der seinen edlen Baron respektierte, unabhängig von seiner persönlichen Einstellung zueinander.

Smil of Lichtenburg († 1269) was one of the most important noblemen of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The paper focuses on his career at the court of Ottokar II. Firstly, Smil’s ancestry and early career (before Ottokar became the King) as well as the character of his landed properties is investigated. The paper then focuses on the self-presentation of Smil of Lichtenburg, which was rooted in the chivalric ethos and also emphasized his noble status as a baron; all of this (chivalry and high status) is also clear from the last type of his seal. Next his battle experience is investigated. Smil took part in a major battle (Kressenbrunn 1260), a crusade (1254/55), minor skirmishes (Laa an der Thaya 1246), even unsuccessful campaigns (Mühldorf 1257). In the las part Smil’s position at the court of Ottokar II is investigated. Their personal relation was probably not very warm since Smil took part in Ottokar’s insurrection against his father in 1248/49 at the side of “the old King” Wenceslas I against the future king. Even though Smil did not hold any office at the time of the reign of Ottokar II, he was very frequently at the court of the king and his large landed properties were never seizes. Maybe the best way of describing Smil’s position at the court is that of a role-play. Smil played the part of a knightly courtier and Ottokar posed as a good king respecting his noble baron, no matter their personal attitudes to each other.
