The Mathematics of Crime and the Crime of Censorship on the Czech Public Radio
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
True crime podcast ´Mathematics of Crime´ from 2018 by Magdalena Sodomkova and Brit Jensen, had the best chance to become the star of investigative journalism on Czech Public Radio. But it didn't happen. Due to censorship, clientelism in the judiciary and media management, and the ever-deepening crisis of institutions, the podcast was never broadcasted, and the whole case had many legal and personal connotations. The case study is based on an interpretation of the concept of "public interest", Reporters Without Borders' analysis of the media situation in post-communist Central Europe and the mechanisms of internal censorship introduced by the public institution itself. An important part of the study are the references to the phenomenon of "media capture". The high social relevance of the article points to the indispensable role of independent media and the organisations that support them. The Czech Foundation for Independent Journalism played a key role in the "Mathematics of Crime" case. The study examines its position as co-producer of the podcast and its ability to stand up for journalists by providing independent expertise and assessing the ethics of the work. The ´Mathematics of Crime´ podcast has proven its excellence in independent art competitions. It was named the Best Czech Podcast of 2018 (Active Radio Awards), won the main prize of the Prix Bohemia Radio 2019, and was shortlisted for the Prix Europa 2019. At the same time, however, it showed a deep institutional crisis of the public service radio medium and a number of negative phenomena, which in the conclusion of the study the author describes as moral and factual "neonormalization", referring to the deep depression of the media during the communist rule in Czechoslovakia before 1989.
