Architecture represented an essential part of Mosul’s cultural heritage. However, virtually all examples of the oldest and most valuable layers of architectural works, dated to the later sixth/twelfth century and the first half of the seventh/thirteenth century, were deliberately destroyed by radicals of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) in 2014–7.
