The chapter deals with the basic principles of the anthropological study of religion and with the epistemological foundations of the anthropology of religion. The chapter includes examples of their application in anthropological research practice and it also summarizes methodological approaches in the anthropological study of religion. It discusses the historical context of the formation of the anthropology of religion and treats the issues of defining religion in cultural anthropology.
