This chapter focuses on the historical development of the cognitive science of religion, which it sees as a cognitive turning point in the field. For the cognitive turn in religious studies has been a major focus of scholarship since the 1990s. Since the 1990s, basic premises have been formulated, which could be summarized as follows: 1) the source of religious thought and behavior is the human mind or cognition; 2) the rejection of the existence of religion as a very specific and unique category &quot;sui generis&quot;; 3) the counterposition between understanding and explanation; 4) the explanation of religion as a biological, social, cultural and historical category; 5) the methodological integration of the human sciences with the natural sciences; 6) the subscription to an evolutionary perspective; 7) the emphasis on an experimental approach.
