Evidence for human activities in the Brdy Mountains until the Late Middle Ages
Popis výsledku anglicky
The study sums up knowledge about all so far published sites associated with human activities in the territory of the Brdy Mountains (stretching in the borderland between western, southern and central Bohemia) until the Late Middle Ages. This is the first summary that has been drawn up for this rather specific and in many respects underestimated region. Several isolated finds dating from different periods of both earlier and later prehistory can be regarded as evidence for the incorporation of this mountainous landscape into the living space of contemporaneous people. Due to its nature, such evidence is very difficult to interpret. That is why the existence of several central sites in the form of fortified areas/hillforts is even more remarkable. The importance of a pottery hoard from Vacíkov, which dates from the Middle Bronze Age, seems to transcend the region's borders, due to its exceptionality and landscape context. We also record several more important medieval castles which are promising for future research, as well as other fortified sites unknown to written sources. The Benedictine priory of Baštiny can be regarded as a site of European importance. These are the remains of a small priory which ceased to exist after a short period of time and whose premises were not influenced by later construction or agricultural activities. Little attention has so far been paid to the other monastic complex in the region – the Augustine monastery of Ostrov. In the Brdy Mountains, especially along their edges, there are still several existing (or recently evacuated) villages of medieval origin. Scarce archaeological finds from their built up areas or immediate vicinities point to earlier origins than those indicated by the earliest available written records. A large number of exploitation districts are present in the delimited area. However, we lack data which would enable to date most such sites. The district on Jedlová Mountain, where iron and mercury ores occur, probably dates back to the Middle Ages. If this date is confirmed, mercury mining during the Middle Ages would be quite unique in the conditions of the Czech Republic. The Brdy Mountains are also very important for our knowledge of high and late medieval processing of iron and polymetallic ores. The Brdy sites also have a crucial importance for our knowledge of medieval settlement in agriculturally marginal regions. Several pieces of evidence for residential or manufacturing districts are known from central parts of the mountains which were certainly not part of ordinary agricultural settlement in the foothills, due to their isolated locations. For sites showing a permanent nature of settlement, a non agrarian lifestyle of their inhabitants is presumed, with transregional production of resources originating from a forest environment.
