Slovakia: The Twilight (or Rebirth) of Social Democracy?
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter analyses and depicts the state of social democracy in Slovakia as represented by the Smer-SD (Smer-Sociálna demokracia, Direction-Social Democracy). This in-depth analysis primarily focuses on the last decade of Smer-SD governing. Amongst others, it answers the questions such as What is the position of the Slovak left in its political system? How does the party organise itself internally? Who are the voters of the Smer-SD, and how is the electorate geographically distributed? The chapter explores not only how Smer-SD lost support between 2012 and 2022 and how the single-ruled party has become an opposition party but also points out that as an opposition party, Smer-SD has strengthened and radicalised its nationalistic and populist rhetoric and is getting closer to far-right rhetoric than ever before. Finally, the chapter discusses a possible scenario of future development for both the Slovak left and the political system per se after the Smer-SD split when the former Smer-SD members established Hlas-SD (Voice-Social Democracy).
