Ornaments of Horror: Kubrick’s Carpet, Wallpaper, and the Rococo Survival
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article examines Czech visual artist Jan Šerých's 2005 large-scale mural "Kubrick's Carpet" as a tribute to the famous hexagonal carpet pattern from Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" (1980). While Kubrick's carpet has become iconic, this article argues that Šerých's mural contributes a bold extension, transforming the horizontal rug into an upright wallpaper, which engages with the ornamental form and its effect on space and subjectivity. Drawing from Henri Focillon's ideas on the autonomous nature of ornament, the article explores how Šerých's piece blurs the lines between figure and ground, invoking a "levitating point of view" that unsettles the viewer's perception. By juxtaposing rococo ornamentation with the geometric patterns of Kubrick's carpet, Šerých evokes a transhistorical survival of ornamental form, challenging the traditional boundaries of visual framing and inviting the viewer to become part of its abstract morphology.
