The chapter focuses on four American films produced and directed by Hugo Haas that were distributed by Columbia Pictures between (Pickup, Strange Fascination, One Girl's Confession and Bait). The author relates them to Haas's film and theatre work in Czechoslovakia and describes their specific poetics, influenced by his status as an exile and his situation on the fringes of the American film industry: their form was influenced by low budgets and limited technical resources. Despite these production constraints, the films stand out for their unusual consistency, which allows Haas to be labeled as an auteur of low-budget cinema. The chapter is part of a collective monograph published by the prestigious publishing house Les Éditions de l'Œil on the occasion of the extensive retrospective of Columbia Pictures at the Locarno International Film Festival.
