The conference, held from June 21 to 23, 2024, explored Myanmar’s complex and multifaceted role in regional and global affairs, challenging its conventional perception as a mere buffer state between major powers such as India and China. The event began with a keynote speech by Catherine Renshaw (Western Sydney University) and continued with thematic panels addressing Myanmar’s historical, political, economic, and cultural significance. Discussions highlighted the geopolitical impact of the 2021 military coup, which deepened Myanmar’s ties with China and Russia while exacerbating internal conflicts that spilled over into neighboring countries, compelling ASEAN to adopt a more active diplomatic role. Contributions also examined Myanmar’s media landscape, human rights situation, and diaspora communities, emphasizing the country’s broader influence in international relations.
