Das Kapitel beschreibt die Hintergründe des Besuchs von Paul Schuitema, niederländischer Avantgarde-Designer, Fotograf, Filmemacher und Dozent für „Werbung“ an der Kunstakademie in Den Haag, in der Tschechoslowakei zwischen 1935 und 1936. Am 10. Januar 1936 hielt er im Prager Uměleckoprůmyslové muzeum (Museum für angewandte Kunst) einen „Vortrag mit Lichtbildern“ über das „moderne Holland“. Das Kapitel befasst sich mit Schuitemas Reise (er hielt auch zwei Vorträge in Brünn auf Einladung des bekannten Architekten František Kalivoda) und den gegenseitigen Beziehungen zwischen der niederländischen und der tschechoslowakischen Avantgarde. Das Kapitel gibt auch einen kurzen Überblick über die niederländische Kunstbewegung „Nieuw Zakelijkheid“, die niederländische Version des Funktionalismus, und zeigt, welche Position Schuitema in dieser Bewegung einnahm.

The chapter provides background information on the visit of Paul Schuitema, Dutch avant-garde designer, photographer, filmmaker and teacher in the ‘advertising’ department at the Hague Academy of Art, to Czechoslovakia around the turn of the year 1935/36. On 10 January 1936 he gave a ‘lecture with slides’ in the Prague Uměleckoprůmyslové muzeum (Museum of Applied Arts) on ‘modern Holland’. The chapter discusses Schuitema&apos;s trip (he also gave two lectures in Brno at the invitation of the well-known architect František Kalivoda) and the mutual relationships between the Dutch and Czechoslovak avant-garde. The chapter also provides a brief overview of the Dutch art movement ‘New Objectivity’, the Dutch version of functionalism, and shows Schuitema&apos;s position in this movement.
