Sounds, Narrative, and Emotions in Historical Exhibitions: The Case of the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

In a methodologically innovative way, the chapter reflects on the use of sound in a new multimedia exhibition at the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Using the theoretical concept of audionarratology to explore the interfaces of sound and narrative, the chapter argues that the sounds produced by the exhibition can be analysed as narratives themselves, without resorting to the traditional visual perspective. The aim of the multimedia exhibition is to evoke emotions in the visitor, and sounds are an important part of achieving this aim. They orient visitors to the story being told, mark shifts in its development and diffuse micro-narratives. They even have the potential to disrupt, albeit unintentionally, the one-sided narrative of sacrifice and heroism surrounding the Slovak National Uprising. The fictional films created for this exhibition - with the aim of bringing visitors closer to a historical experience - show how museums can actively engage in creating new representations of past realities. The chapter demonstrates that the study of sound in historical museums, which has been underexplored in scholarship, is fertile ground for further research; specifically, the power of sound to bring new perspectives to museum narratives that have traditionally been conveyed primarily through visual means.
