O ensaio, que foi criado no âmbito do projeto internacional Portugueses de Papel, analisa personagens portuguesas no romance Reflexos do baile (1976), do escritor e jornalista fluminense Antonio Callado (1917-1997). Mostra como nesta narrativa, situada no período da ditadura militar brasileira, o autor criou um retrato mordaz tanto da desintegração da esquerda militante brasileira, quanto da barbaridade do regime ditatorial, apoiado, de um lado, pela alienada e conivente elite nacional, e do outro lado, por governos estrangeiros conservadores. O texto concentra-se na análise do personagem do embaixador lusitano Antônio de Carvalhaes, uma figura central no grupo dos diplomatas retratado no romance, cuja imagem contribui consideravelmente para a atmosfera disfórica do livro.

The essay, which was created as part of the international project Portugueses de Papel, analyzes the Portuguese characters in the novel Reflexos do baile (1976), by Brazilian writer and journalist Antonio Callado (1917-1997). It shows how in this narrative, set in the period of the Brazilian military dictatorship, the author created a scathing portrait of both the disintegration of the militant Brazilian left and the barbarity of the dictatorial regime, supported on the one hand by the alienated and conniving national elite, and on the other by conservative foreign governments. The text concentrates on analyzing the character of the Portuguese ambassador Antônio de Carvalhaes, a central figure in the group of diplomats portrayed in the novel, whose image contributes considerably to the dysphoric atmosphere of the book.
