Alt- und Neu-Pilsen waren durch ihre Lage inmitten des Pilsener Beckens unweit des Zusammenflusses von vier großen Flüssen naturgemäß für die Rolle städtischer Zentren in Westböhmen vorherbestimmt. Die Entfernung zwischen den beiden Städten beträgt ca. 9 km (entspricht ungefähr einer altböhmischen Meile). Die schrittweise Entstehung dieser beiden mittelalterlichen Orte und die Ablösung Alt-Pilsens durch eine neue, großzügige Stadt gegen Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts hat bereits seit Ende des Mittelalters unterschiedliche Interpretationsversuche provoziert. Die vorliegende Studie revidiert die Ansichten zur urbanen Entwicklung Pilsens sowie zu den anfänglichen Beziehungen zwischen Alt- und Neu-Pilsen und skizziert die neueste Interpretation dieser Fragen, die vor allem dank einer intensiven Nutzung der archäologischen Grabungsergebnisse formuliert werden konnte. Da keine Quellen existieren, in denen die Translation Pilsens im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert explizit erfasst worden wäre, und der komplexe Prozess daher in den zeitgenössischen Quellen nur indirekt reflektiert wird, darf dieses wichtige Kapitel der westböhmischen Geschichte selbst nach 130 Forschungsjahren nicht als geklärt gelten. Einige gewichtige Aspekte bleiben weiterhin offen.

With their location in the middle of the Pilsen Basin near the confluence of four major rivers, Old and New Pilsen were naturally destined to become urban centers of West Bohemia. The distance between the two cities is about 9 km (approximately one Old Bohemian mile). The gradual development of these two medieval cities and the replacement of Old Pilsen by a new, large city at the end of the 13th century have given rise to various attempts at interpretation since the end of the Middle Ages. The presented study revises the views on the urban development of Pilsen and the initial relations between Old and New Pilsen and outlines the latest interpretation of these questions, which was possible to formulate mainly thanks to the intensive use of the results of archaeological research. Since there are no sources that would explicitly record the translation of Pilsen in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the complex process is therefore reflected only indirectly in contemporary sources, this important chapter of West Bohemian history cannot be considered resolved even after 130 years of research. Some important aspects remain open.
