L'écriture de la mémoire chez François Mauriac et Jan Čep

Lecteur averti de l’œuvre de François Mauriac depuis la période de l’entre-deux-guerres, où ses livres furent traduits en Tchécoslovaquie, Jan Čep, écrivain et essayiste tchèque, poursuit son intérêt pour son homologue français tout au long de sa vie. On peut même dire que cet intérêt va croissant à partir du moment où l’écrivain tchèque s’installe durablement en France en tant qu’exilé après le coup d’Etat de février 1948, et notamment lorsqu’il épouse, en 1954, la fille de Charles Du Bos, ce qui lui permettra de rencontrer occasionnnellement le lauréat du Prix Nobel de 1952. Après avoir brièvement retracé la relation mutuelle des deux écrivains, cet article a pour but d’examiner comment l’un et l’autre réfléchissent sur le phénomène de la mémoire, et ceci notamment à travers leurs textes autobiographiques, Mémoires intérieures dans le cas de Mauriac et Ma sœur l’angoisse dans celui de Čep.

An avid reader of François Mauriac's work from the inter-war period, when his books were translated in Czechoslovakia, Czech writer and essayist Jan Čep continued his interest in his French counterpart throughout his life. It could even be said that this interest grew from the moment the Czech writer settled permanently in France as an exile after the coup d'état of February 1948, and particularly when he married Charles Du Bos's daughter in 1954, which enabled him to meet the 1952 Nobel Prize winner occasionally. After briefly tracing the mutual relationship between the two writers, the aim of this article is to examine how both reflect on the phenomenon of memory, particularly through their autobiographical texts, Mémoires intérieures in Mauriac's case and Ma sœur l'angoisse in Čep's.
