Corpus of Dramas by the Čapek Brothers From a Quantitative Perspective
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This paper presents the first comprehensive quantitative analysis of the Čapek brothers´ dramas, focusing on the linguistic and stylistic differences between their individual and collaborative plays. The analysis compares a corpus of ten plays, divided into two subcorpora (1 - character dialogues vs. 2 - authorial and stage commentaries), in terms of part-of-speech distribution and morphological coefficients (including nominality and the Busemann coefficient), combining frequency-based approaches with cluster analysis. The results reveal significant stylistic differences between the authors: Josef Čapek’s drama is characterized by a higher degree of descriptiveness and nominality with a high frequency of nouns, whereas Karel Čapek’s style exhibits a more dynamic, verbally oriented language with a predominance of verbs; the co-authored dramas predominantly occupy an intermediary position. Cluster analysis confirms the unique position of Josef’s plays as a separate cluster and demonstrates that stage/authorial directions show a higher degree of inter-authorial variability than the dialogues. Simultaneously, the study confirms the fundamental importance of separating the dialogic and metatextual layers for the validity of quantitative analyses of dramatic texts and establishes a methodological framework for further corpus-based research into authorship and style in drama.
