Ideological Travelogue: Machar’s Image of Rome in its Historical Context
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter is a case study illustrating the ideological distortion of the travelogue genre. Using the example of the text Rome by Czech author Josef Svatopluk Machar, the author demonstrates his a priori approach to historical and intellectual concepts of antiquity and Christianity. He contrasts them and constructs his travel book Rome as a testament to his admiration for ancient culture. He considers everything that came with the Christian era to be merely decadent. The work documents contemporary criticism that opposed this method of writing travelogues. Nevertheless, the book enjoyed great popularity among readers and was reprinted twelve times over the course of a decade. Negative reviews could have given the impression that the book Rome was doomed to failure with readers, but the opposite happened: Machar's ideological narrator managed to convince readers not only of the appeal of the travelogue genre, but also of its potential to be transformed into a platform for expressing opinions.
