Taiwan (officially the Republic of China, ROC), despite being de facto independent from China (officially the People's Republic of China, PRC), is frequently viewed in connection with China, or even in its shadow. This has led to Taiwan being labelled as a place that is stuck in its own history. Why is that the case? Today, when we mention “China,” we typically mean the People's Republic of China. However, prior to 1949, the Republic of China was its predecessor. In an altered form, the latter exists to this day on the island of Taiwan.
