This chapter focuses on the key phenomena and events that have shaped the Belarusian cultural and historical landscape but have often remained hidden from the international reader by the historical perspectives of neighboring nations, above all by the Russian imperialist myth. This chapter examines the history and transformation of the term “Rus’” and “Lithuania” and their role in shaping the Belarusian cultural and historical space in the premodern era, demonstrating the distinctness of this space and its connections to the broader European historical process. It shows how, in the modern era, the transformations of this landscape, the delayed nation-building, and attempts to build an independent nation-state were happening under the pressure of Russification and Soviet authoritarian modernization.
