The article is devoted to the legal nature and status of churches in the Czech Republic and the extent of their autonomy. It follows indirectly from the Czech legislation that three "levels" of the status of churches are distinguished: churches as an association of persons (without legal subjectivity), registered churches (having the status of a legal entity under private law) and registered churches with so-called special authorizations (legal entities under private law with authorizations of a public nature). It is a rather complex system where, in addition, to register a church and grant special rights, a certain form of state intervention is required - the issuance of an administrative decision.
