What happens after death? Beliefs in an afterlife among religious and non-religious children in the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Every living person is confronted with existential questions of death and an afterlife, even children and adolescents. The aim of our study was to explore religious and non-religious children’s beliefs related to an afterlife. We focused on the differences in these beliefs in both groups. To explore this issue, we conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews. The data was gathered from 31 participants in the age range from 11 to 16 years. Thematic analysis revealed that most of the participants in both groups be-lieved in some form of an afterlife. Some differences were found between the groups in terms of the content of the beliefs but also in the sources that inspired them. One of the common themes for both groups was a belief in heaven. Both groups, however, differed in the way they understood this concept. The study shows that beliefs in an afterlife are common and important for both religious and non-religious children.
