Fraternal Correction in the Theology of John Hus
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Since people living together is always demanding in one way or another, Christians are familiar with the practice of fraternal correction. It stems from a Matthean pericope about triple admonition: in private, among witnesses and in front of the church (Mt 18:15–17). John Hus, a famous Czech reformer, treats the topic in his Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard (1407–1409), but as was usual towards the end of scholasticism, the text lacks originality consisting mainly of quotations from Thomas Aquinas. Nevertheless, Hus returned to the topic in his later writings, which were influenced by John Wycliffe. I argue that fraternal correction did not work so much as a custom in the whole church at that time, but rather as a principle according to which church discipline was measured: e.g. in the area of excommunication, sacraments and the protection of Church property.
