The present chapter focuses on three biblical metaphors for the relationship between humans and nature, namely, steward, gardener, and shepherd. These metaphors have the potential to serve as a distinct and well-founded source of inspiration for a sustainable way of life. Although none of these metaphors are explicitly used in the Bible to describe the human-nature relationship, they all share some connection to it, as opposed to the dominion metaphor found in Genesis 1:28. The chapter examines these metaphors through the lenses of three functions of metaphors: cognitive, didactic, and performative. It concludes that contemporary interpretations of these metaphors often deviate from their original biblical context. Finally, the chapter suggests some implications for the cognitive, didactic, and performative applications of the aforementioned metaphors.
