Relation between the Holy See and Czechoslovakia in the years 1945-1950 (from the restoration of diplomatic relations to the expulsion of the last diplomatic representative of the Vatican)

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

After the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia in October 1918, diplomatic relations were established with the Holy See, which, despite moments of crisis (e.g. the Marmaggi affair, the Ciriaci affair) or restrictions imposed by the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazi occupying power (from March 1939 to May 1945), existed until 1950, when they were “non-standard” terminated by the communist Czechoslovak government. After the war, diplomatic relations were restored, the pre-war nuncio, Mons. Saverio Ritter, returned, but had to accept the position of internunciature. All episcopal sees in Bohemia and Moravia were occupied, but future events showed that the communist power had a clear plan for the Catholic Church – its subordination to state power, even to its liquidation. In June 1949, the pastoral letter Hlas biskupů a ordinářů v hodině velké zkoušky (Voice of Bishops and Ordinary in the Hour of Great Trial) was confiscated. In July 1949, the previous Incaricato d'affari Gennaro Verolino was dismissed. Soon the Holy See proceeded to appoint auxiliary bishops without consulting the government. In March 1950, the last papal diplomat, Mons. De Liva, was dismissed. At the same time, the Czechoslovak legation to the Holy See was abandoned without official notice. The situation that arose was quite unusual. Although diplomatic relations were actually severed, Czechoslovakia denied this, saying that only the appointment of a new papal diplomat in Czechoslovakia was under discussion.
