Distribution, harmfulness and pathogenic variability of cucurbit downy mildew in the Czech Republic.

The occurrence of Pseudoperonospora cubensis in cucurbit vegetables in the Czech Republic was evaluated during the year 2001. The monitoring was realized on 106 locations. Natural infection of P. cubensis was proved only on cucumbers (Cucumis sativus). The epidemic occurrence started in the second half of July and beginning of August 2001. On the majority of infected fields (88%) medium or high level of infection degree was recorded. In total 42 isolates of P. cubensis were tested for their pathogenic variability. Pathogenicity was tested on the differential set of 12 genotypes of cucurbitaceous plants. The substantial part of P. cubensis isolates (76%) belonged to the group of highly pathogenic isolates, 19% of isolates expressed medium pathogenicityand only two isolates (5%) were characterized by low level of pathogenicity. Altogether 34 different pathotypes of P. cubensis were determined
