Botanical Garden of Palacký University in Olomouc - history and recent development

Botanical Garden in Olomouc was established in 1901, thanks to efforts of Botanical Association in Olomouc. Since 1956 it is part of the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Palacký University. At about 2000 species are grown in the area of 0.6 ha of the garden. In 2005 the Botanical Garden acted as one of founding members the Association of Botanical Gardens of the Czech Republic. Current activities are primarily aimed at education of students and scholars; garden is open for public and organizestemporal specialized exhibitions (e.g. poisonous and risky plants). Permanent exhibitions of plants from the family Zingiberaceae and carnivorous plants were created in neighbouring greenhouses of Fair Grounds Flora Olomouc Ltd. In botanical garden thereare located special unique collections of genera Dianthus, Molinia, Scilla, Taraxacum, chive and grasses from Patagonia.
