From about 40 relatives of cultivated almonds, the wild species Prunus tenella Batsch (syn. Amygdalus nana L.) reach in the South Moravia in the Czech Republic its Northern limit of natural distribution. Moravia) The cultivation of almond in Central Europe and Czech Lands was promoted by the Charles IV, Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor (1316 ? 1378), and later by Marie Therese, empress of Austrian-Hungarian monarchy in 1740 ? 1780. In the half of the 20th century, cultivation of alomonds ín the Czech Lands was promoted by Prof. Josef Podpěra, Remarquable almond orchard was created in Hustopeče (South Moravia). Almonds are cultivated in the Czech Republic mostly in areas with mean year temperature of 9 °C, in the altitude till 300 m a.s.l.
