"Uncommon" polyamines were first discovered and thoroughly studied in thermophilic and halophylic bacteria and were shown to be implicated in their adaptation to the extreme environment. Many uncommon polyamines described previously in procaryota have been also shown to widely occur within eucaryotic algae, aquatic and leguminous plants and marine invertebrates. The occurrence of homospermidine is ubiquitous among plants, whereas the presence or increased formation of other uncommon polyamines was reported in plants exposed to environmental stress. Norspermidine and norspermine were detected in several plants under drought or high temperature. Current research interests in the field of uncommon polyamines include their possible role in the regulation of cell division and death.
