Over last five years or so we can witness substantial changes in economic and geographical structures of national economies of new member states of the EU leading hopefully from branch plant economies towards high-road strategy of their socioeconomic development. The paper is dealing with emerging sector of knowledge economy ? knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) in the context of broader transition process with using the theoretical framework borrowed from institutional economy and new economicsociology in a geographical context. Substantial role on the way towards knowledge based economy (KBE) is played by KIBS. The most important actors influencing this process in new European Union (EU) member states are foreign direct investment (FDI) andinstitutional setting on national and EU level.
