We investigated relationships between melanin- and carotenoid-based ornaments in the Great Tit Parus major and the growth of tail feathers. Growth rate of feathers was estimated from the width of growth bars. We found no correlation between the area of black breast stripe and growth bars. Contrary to expectations, we found a negative relationship between the intensity of yellow breast feathers and growth bars on tail feathers. Thus, our results suggest that growth bars are not a reliable method to estimate condition in wild ranging Great Tits
