Capillary electrophoresis (CE) represents a high-efficient separation technique which can be used for separation of various types of compounds ranging from low-molecular weight inorganic and organic ions, to structurally big compounds as proteins, nucleic acids or objects as viruses, cells or nanoparticles. However, CE with a conventional UV detector used to suffer from a lack of detection sensitivity since the optical path of the detector is too short. This problem mostly appears if there is a need forseparation of compounds with a biological or medicinal impact (toxicologically important compounds, markers of diseases, metabolites etc.). Fortunately, there is a possibility to overcome this problem by using off-line or on-line preconcentration techniques. The off-line preconcentration techniques (L-L extraction, SPE) are mostly used since they are well-known from other separations as GC or LC.
