Delimiting the central areas of the cities by using GIS methods
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Research of an inner structure of a city is one of the priorities of the current city geography. The city center is a commonly used term which, however, can have several meanings. This paper deals with the delimiting city centers (central areas with the highest human activity) by using GIS methods. Six cities in Middle Eastern European Countries (former Communist Bloc) were chosen for the project (Olomouc - CZ, Ostrava - CZ, Leipzig - DE, Košice - SK, Katowice - PL and Székesfehérvár - HU). Cities are comparable in size, character, and spatial structure. The theoretical part of the paper is focused on the brief overview of the methods used to a delimitation of city center (Central Business District). Also, the differences between individual delimitations and also their possible applications are described. Practical part deals with the delimitation of centers of activities according to the distributions of the density of services, density of streets and density of built areas. The authors describe, compare and discuss chosen methods and assess the achieved results and also the applicability of the designed methods for other cities.
