We show that in a congruence distributive variety every homomorphism of the finite direct product of algebras can be decomposed into a direct product of homomorphisms on the factors provided the images are hereditary directly irreducible. This is not true for infinite direct products where the decomposition depends on the ultrafilters of the index set.
