Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Obesity is a common, complex and growing global health problem; it has long been associated with serious health issues in the population of different age groups, for example, diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis and cancer, to name a few. Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 300 million obese people around the globe, and the number is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world. Many approved anti-obesity medicines have recently been withdrawn from the market because of serious adverse effects, as well as their potential for drug abuse and dependency. Traditionally, plants, especially edible plants, have long been used to treat or prevent obesity, and several bioactive compounds from those plants have paved the way for new anti-obesity drug discovery and development processes. Many of these food or medicinal plants and their bioactive compounds have been subjected to clinical trials and have been proved to be effective in the treatment of obesity. This chapter presents an overview on anti-obesity natural products, their mechanisms of actions, and evaluate their potential in novel anti-obesity drug development.
