Nanotoxicity Effects of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles on Aquatic and Soil Ecosystems
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The large-scale production and use of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), including metal oxide NPs (MONPs) in different sectors of the economy result in their increased entry into environmental matrices where they can adversely affect various non-target organisms in aquatic and soil ecosystems. Excessive accumulation of MONPs contaminants in aquatic and soil flora and fauna induces oxidative stress resulting in serious damages to exposed organisms. Moreover, environmental contamination by MONPs may pose a risk for human health as well, because of their trophic transfer especially in aquatic food webs, where aquatic organisms such as algae form the basic trophic levels for many other organisms, including terrestrial ones. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the toxic effects and relevant mechanisms of action of MONPs (CuO, ZnO Fe2O3, Fe3O4, NiO, MgO, Al2O3 NPs, CeO2 NPs and TiO2 NPs) on freshwater and marine algae and cyanobacteria, aquatic plants and aquatic animals (mainly crustaceans, snails, bivalves, amphibians or fishes), on the number and composition of soil microbial communities and the toxic impact on soil fauna, while adverse impact on terrestrial plants is also briefly discussed.
