Exploring land suitability scenarios in Bratislava: a multicriteria analysis with an Urban Planner model

For effective urban planning, land suitability analysis can be utilized to direct development toward the most appropriate areas. However, urban expansion must balance growth with spatial and legislative constraints. This study aims to evaluate these constraints within land suitability analysis for the city of Bratislava, focusing on Housing, Production and Storage, Civic Amenities, Leisure and Sport, and Urban Landscape Greenery. To achieve this, the Urban Planner methodology was applied. This approach assesses land suitability using multicriteria analysis and subsequently integrates constraints through scenario modeling. The results indicate that highly suitable areas constitute only a small portion of the city, while nearly one-third of the territory is entirely restricted from development. These findings are visualized in five map outputs, each illustrating land suitability for a specific use along with scenario-based representations of spatial constraints. These maps serve as valuable tools for guiding Bratislava’s future development and directing investments efficiently.
