The metabolism of degradation of cytokinins is an important process that controls the levels of cytokinin active forms and their distribution in plant tissues. It is appears to be due, in large part, to the activity of a specific enzyme, cytokinin oxidase (CKOx). This review tries to frame the existing limited information about this enzyme and introduces some new facts which were found in our laboratory about the mechanism of degradation of cytokinins with unsaturated isoprenoid side chains. However, complete clarity of its effect on cytokinin regulation and its molecular and biochemical properties requires purification to homogeneity of the protein with cytokinin oxidase activity and ultimate development of the requisite molecular probes.
