Der Beitrag thematisiert den Roman von Horst Bienek "Die erste Polka" - den ersten Teil der sog. Gleiwitzer Tetralogie, der zum Teil autobiographisch ist. Der Autor beschreibt die Veränderungen in der oberschlesischen Stadt an der Grenze zwischen dem deutschen und dem polnischen Teil dieser Region kurz vor dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges.

The contribution contains a treatise about a novel called Die erste Polka by Horst Bienek, the first volume of so-called Glivice tetralogy (Gleiwitzer Tetralogie), which is partially autobiographic. The author describes the conditions in an Upper Silesian town on the boundary between German and Polish part of this region just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Multilingualism and multiculturalism are the basic topics, which influence the destinies of Bienek's literary characters, in the same way as the author experienced it in his childhood.
