Selected aspects of quality of life in the work of caregivers in homes for older adults.

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The phenomenon of quality of life has recently become a widely discussed topic. The objective of the paper is to assess quality of life in persons providing care to clients living in homes for older adults. For this purpose an anonymous questionnaire survey was performed, the aim of which was to identify and describe some of the factors affecting the quality of life in caregivers, and to find out how they perceive their life, what the conditions of their work are, and whether they are satisfied with these conditions. The survey involved 50 employees of selected homes for older adults in four regions of the Czech Republic (Zlín Region, South Moravian Region, Pardubice Region and Hradec Králové Region). The questionnaire was divided into five parts aimed at basic information about the respondents, working conditions, prevention of the burnout syndrome and quality of life, where the last part used the SEIQoL questionnaire. The results suggested some alarming findings: persons caring for older adults in residential establishments often have excessively long working hours, look after a large number of individuals, are exhausted as a result of working with seniors with a higher degree of dependence on care, are not always provided with adequate working conditions, etc. When this is combined with an insufficient degree of prevention (e.g. in the form of supervision, regarding the fact that a large proportion of respondents are not supervised at work), the situation is even worse in terms of the burnout syndrome.
