Es geht in dem Artikel um die weltreisende slowenisch-deutsche Autorin Alma Karlin, die in den dreissiger Jahren eine der meistgelesenen Reiseschriftstellerinnen ihrer Zeit war. Ihr Bericht über ihren Aufenthalt auf verschiedenen Inseln der Südsee ist von einer rassistischen Bewertung der Einheimischen und gleichzeitiger Selbstheroisierung bestimmt. Die Südsee ist für sie nicht nur eine Welt fern aller Kultur, sondern auch ein feindlicher und gefährlicher Bereich, in dem Kannibalismus und Krankheiten die Europäer bedrohen. In ihren Südseeerzählungen, die in dem Aufsatz mit dem Reisebericht verglichen werden, sind die negativen Stereotype über diese Welt noch stärker ausgearbeitet und die Dekonstruktion jeder Südsee-Romantik noch bestimmender.

The paper deals with the German-Slowenian author Alma Karlin, who travelled extensively through the whole world and who was during the thirties of the last century one of the most widely read travel-writers. Her report about the time she spent on different islands of the south sea is dominated by racist judgements on the indigenous population but also by a heroic representation of herself and her travel achievements. The south sea is presented not only as a space without any culture but also as a dangerous and hostile place where cannibalism and different illnesses threaten all Europeans. In the stories she wrote about the south sea which in this paper are compared with her travel report the negative stereotypes are even more prominent and the aim to destruct the romantic myth of the South Sea is more apparent.
