The book focuses on the issues of perception and mental processing of harmonic intervals, chords, and harmony. In the first two chapters the issues of theories of harmony perception, hierarchy, expectations, preference rules, and tonality are outlined. The third chapter deals with the musical development of the competence to process harmonic material in the mind. The next chapters follow in the order of development of the harmonic potentials. The fourth chapter discusses the period of infants, and the sensory consonance and dissonance experiments. The fifth chapter examines the period in which the sense for tonality is reinforced. In the school age period, the ability of hierarchy of music material and the formation of the ability to assess musical consonance and dissonance are observed. Finally, selected experiments with adults are commented on.
