Czechoslovak Education between the Years 1968 and 1989 in the Context of an Oppressed Civil Society

The aim of the paper is to extend current knowledge of the Czechoslovak education between the years 1968 and 1989 in the context of an oppressed civil society. The text is divided into three main areas. The first one summarizes the development of civil society in the 20th century with an emphasis on the communist regime. The second thematic unit focuses on the methodological approach to the research and explains the concepts of civic and political participation, including an explanation of the connection between research interest in civil society and the extracurricular activities of teachers between 1968 and 1989. The third part presents specific examples of extracurricular activities of teachers. The conclusion of the paper summarises the results of the research which, according to Guasti categorization, finds extracurricular activities of teachers primarily divided into civic conventional participation (e.g. Juvena, Union of Youth and Pioneer Clubs) and civic unconventional legal participation (legal demonstrations), civic unconventional illegal activity (illegal strikes), controlled aggregated political participation (support of municipality) and individual political participation (political elections).
