The Relationship between Problematic Internet Use and Life Satisfaction in University Students: a Systematic Review
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The increasing availability of internet connection and the more extensive use of information technology in everyday life provides space for research studies aimed at problematic behaviour on the internet. The purpose of this study was to analyse the overview of the latest findings from research studies in the area of internet addition/problematic internet use and life satisfaction among teacher training students. The method selected for this pilot study was the so-called systematic review in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) database of Palacký University Olomouc. The following review inclusion criteria were defined: teacher training students, research studies from the past 5 years (2016–2021), quantitative research, studies published in English, focus consistent with the purpose of our study. The initial intention to focus on the target group of teacher training students had to be modified due to the absence of research studies to undergraduate students irrespective of their specialization. The analysis of research studies suggested a correlation between problematic internet use and loneliness and social interaction anxiety. These constructs are considered as indicators of psychological wellbeing. A negative correlation was observed between problematic internet use and life satisfaction and the level of empathy. The correlation between life satisfaction and internet overuse in relation to subjective wellbeing and positive emotions was more significant in research samples dominated by women. Only one study in our sample did not suggest a correlation between life satisfaction and internet addiction but only loneliness. The present study revealed a lack of studies primarily aimed at teacher training students in the context of the issue addressed.
